Understanding Qualifying Life Events
A qualifying life event is a change in your life that may allow you to enroll in or change ACA Marketplace health insurance outside of Open Enrollment through a Special Enrollment Period.
Common examples include:
-
Losing health coverage through an employer or losing eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP.
-
Turning 26 and losing coverage under a parent’s plan.
-
Getting married.
-
Having a baby, adopting a child, or receiving a foster placement.
-
Getting divorced or legally separated and losing health coverage as a result.
-
Moving to a new ZIP code or county, subject to prior coverage requirements.
-
A death in the household that causes you to lose your current coverage.
-
Becoming a U.S. citizen or leaving incarceration.
Most enrollment windows last 60 days, though some events have different deadlines. Eligibility requirements apply, and documentation may be needed.
